Emmetsburg Rotary recognized Paul and Teresa Saxton with the Business & Industry Award of Merit this week.

The Saxtons owned and operated Saxton’s Greenhouse and Flowers for over 30 years. They sold their business at the beginning of this year.

The award is “in recognition of outstanding service toward the betterment of Emmetsburg by dedicated involvement in promoting the business community and Chamber of Commerce endeavors.”

Natives of Palo Alto County, Paul worked in ag-related businesses and Teresa was a nurse before becoming Emmetsburg business owners in December 1977. They purchased the greenhouse and immediately began re-building the business from the ground up. Grand opening was March 10, 1978.

Through the years, Paul and Teresa grew their business and helped their community grow, too. Paul has served on the Parks Board for the past 25 years and helps oversee growth of Emmetsburg parks. Since the early 1990s he has served on Emmetsburg Municipal utilities Board of Trustees. He has also served on the Lakeside Lutheran Home Board since the early 1990s.

Teresa Saxton represents the business on the Chamber of Commerce She became chairman of the Downtown Beautification Committee and raised matching funds to get a grant for the new planters and benches that grace the downtown. Teresa has also been active in Emmetsburg Retail Association, working to promote the business community.

Paul and Teresa expressed their thanks to Rotary for the honor, praising the community and area residents for their support.
