School Board Handles End-of-Year Business
A variety of end-of-the-school year business was discussed and acted upon by the Emmetsburg Community Schools Board of Education during their meeting on Apr. 20, at the high school/middle school library.
In staff-related business, the school board offered contracts to Renee Mahon for the guidance counselor position at the high school, Randy Olson for the special education teaching vacancy at the middle school, and Melissa (Missy) Sumner for the elementary special education teaching position, which also includes special education and Title I responsibilities at Emmetsburg Catholic School.
Renee Mahon, one of 13 applicants for the position, comes to Emmetsburg from Winner, South Dakota, where she teaches at a school similar in size to Emmetsburg, as well as one-room and two-room schoolhouses. She is originally from the East Coast.
Randy Olson has worked one-on-one with students in Mrs. Gress’s classroom throughout the school year. He has a background in reading and math.
Missy Sumner was one of 30 applicants for the special education position. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She is currently a K-2 teacher at Iowa Falls.
In addition, board members accepted the resignation of Zach Hamann as interim head/assistant wrestling coach and Middle School assistant football coach, and approved Drew Gappa as a volunteer baseball coach. Hamann was thanked for filling in as interim wrestling coach.
Summer PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) projects were discussed and will include projects throughout the district. One-third of the high school hallway ceilings will be replaced so as to comply with the Fire Marshal’s citation. The total cost of this project is approximately $12,000. Carpet in the music room at the West Elementary will also be replaced at a cost of $1,703.81. Finally, the rented lights at the top of the light poles at the high school/middle school complex will be replaced at a cost of $6,050.
Board members approved a pair of 28E agreements with area schools. A 28E agreement to share wrestling with the Armstrong-Ringsted Community School District was approved for 2009-2010. According to Superintendent John Joynt, the Armstrong-Ringsted superintendent has been informed that next year may be the last year to share wrestling as future sharing could result in the wrestling program dropping to Class 1A. Also, a 28E agreement to share swimming with the Algona Community School District was approved for the coming year. Swimmers will participate at their own expense.
In addition, the board agreed to discontinue the 28E agreement with Emmetsburg Catholic School to lease Corrigan Hall as the school district intends to play all Junior Varsity games at the high school/middle school. However, middle school students will be allowed to use the gym free-of-charge for middle school events.
The members of the board also approved the list of 61 Emmetsburg High School graduates of the Class of 2009. The calendar for the 2009-2010 school year was approved. The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 19, 2009, with school slated to wrap up on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
