Farm Program Signup Period Is Now Underway
Area farmers are being reminded that the signup period for the 2009 Farm Program is now open. Les Zobrist, County Executive Director for Palo Alto USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Emmetsburg, says that to date, less than half the producers in Iowa have signed up for the 2009 Farm Program at their local USDA Service Center. Producers may receive 22% of their Farm Program payment when they complete sign up.
Producers who are waiting to find out more about the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program should go ahead and complete required forms and documents for the 2009 Farm Program now. Details and sign up for the ACRE program will not be available until late April. Producers who sign up and take advance payment for 2009 will still have the option to switch to the ACRE program when details of the ACRE program are announced sometime in late April.
New forms required by the 2008 Farm Bill may take producers more time to complete. Producers should contact their local FSA office before coming in to sign up and FSA can speed up the process by preprinting some of the producer’s forms. Zobrist said “Besides being able to receive an advance Farm Program payment, completing the required forms now will make the process faster and easier if producers decide to switch to ACRE or sign up for other farm programs at a later date.”
More detailed information is available by contacting the Palo Alto Farm Service Agency (FSA) at 712-852-3386 Extension 2 or the USDA Service Center at 3302 Main Street, Emmetsburg, IA or by contacting any local FSA County Office.
