Everybody’s Irish This Weekend

With sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40’s forecast, the Luck of the Irish just may prevail for the 2009 St. Patrick’s Celebration in Emmetsburg this weekend.

Friday, March 13

On Friday evening, the Emmetsburg High School St. Pat’s Talent Show will feature local entertainers starting at 7 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. This year’s show will feature the EHS Show Choirs, EHS?Jazz Band, Middle School Show Choir, and the Irish Dancers. IHSMA state piano contestant Josh Hill will play a piano solo, and EHS?alumni Dylan Dykstra will sing a vocal solo. Special performances by the sons and daughters of EHS alumni will highlight Chloe Garmin, Anna Brennan, and Zach Harnden. Matt Lowman, EHS?graduate, will bring a dancing selection to the stage, EHS faculty member Dan Dooley will sing an Eagles’ medley, and Chelsey Rouse will present a piano solo. The public is invited to this fundraising event for the EHS Vocal Music Dept. Admission will be charged.

At 8 p.m. on Friday, the Ceili Fun Night gets underway (following the Fish Fry) at the VFW Hall. The event will feature instrumental and vocal presentations, dance, and a sing-a-longs. A free will offering will be taken.

Saturday, March 14

Saturday dawns bright and early with the O’Round the Loch Scholarship Run starting from and finishing at the Smith Wellness Center. The run features a 1/2 Marathon/Relay (13 miles) at 8:30 a.m., a 10K at 8:40 a.m., 5K at 9 a.m., and a 1.7 mile Fun Run/Walk at 9:10 a.m.

From 10 a.m. to 12 noon, kids of all ages can stop by McNally’s Bake Shop to have their faces painted for the celebration. A free will offering will be taken.

From 10:45 a.m. to 12 noon, the Palo Alto County Democratic Party will sponsor a free will offering Irish Stew meal at the Palo Alto Senior Center on 11th Street.

The pre-parade is slated to start at 1 p.m. Among the honored guests will be the family of the late Mickey Conlon, 2009 St. Pat’s Grand Marshall, Irish Dignitary John Carty and his wife, Kathleen, Secretary of State Michael Mauro, and other area representatives.

The St. Patrick’s Parade officially gets underway at 1:30 p.m. More than 75 entries will march, including the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band, the St. Pat’s Queens, West Central Animal Unit, the Armstrong Funny Car, Emmetsburg Middle School and High School Band, and many other favorites as well as newcomers.

Following the parade at approximately 3 p.m., the Robert Emmet Society will host a reception at the Heritage Center. At 3:30 p.m., everyone is welcome to attend a Social Gathering of the Clans and Friends of Emmetsburg at the Emmetsburg Fire Station. Beverages will be available for both young and old.

On Saturday evening, nationally known quartet Tonic Sol-Fa will bring their feel-good acappella vocalizations to Corrigan Hall. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door the night of the performance or at St. Pat’s Headquarters prior to the show.

Sunday, March 15

The celebration wraps up on Sunday with the Rotary Pancake Breakfast at the VFW, a Trap Shoot at Sportsman Park near Cylinder from 12 noon to 3 p.m., and the St. Pat’s Banquet at Iowa Lakes Community College at 6 p.m.

Celebrate safely this St. Pat’s Weekend. Free transportation will be offered during the evenings by the Dublin’s Express and Wild Rose Casino.
