By Staff | Dec 2, 2008

A near head-on collision Wednesday night claimed the life of a Whittemore man and sent five members of a Minnesota family to hospitals for treatment of injuries. The Iowa State Patrol says 52-year old Clyde Peter Dahlhauser of Whittemore was pronounced dead a the scene of the accident, two and a half miles south of U.S. Highway 18 on Iowa Highway 15.

According to Trooper Kevin Krull of the Iowa State Patrol’s District Six office in Spencer, the collision occurred at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, when Dahlhauser was driving northbound on Highway 15 and attempted to pass a tractor and manure spreader, operated by Frederick G. Schmidt, also of Whittemore, which was also northbound on Highway 15. As Dahlhauser was passing the tractor and manure spreader, he saw an oncoming vehicle in the southbound lane and swerved to the right, striking the rear tire of the open manure spreader. Dahlhauser’s vehicle then collided nearly head-on with the southbound sport utility vehicle driven by 38-year old Corey Lee Mireau of Eden Prairie, Minn. Following the impact, both the Dahlhauser and Mireau vehicles went into the west ditch of the roadway, with Dahlhauser’s car tipping onto its side.

At the time of the impact, Dahlhauser was not wearing a seatbelt, and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Palo Alto County Medical Examiner.

All five occupants of the Mireau vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, with the three children all restrained in child safety seat restraints. Corey Mireau, along with five-year old Maya, four-year old Sophia and eight-year old Reese Mireau were all transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital while 35-year old Michelle Mireau was transported to Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, and was later transferred to Mercy North Iowa in Mason City for further treatment.

Fred Schmidt, operator of the tractor, was uninjured in the accident.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Palo Alto and Kossuth County Sheriff’s Offices, West Bend Fire Department, West Bend Ambulance Service, Whittemore Fire Department, Whittemore Ambulance and Emmetsburg Ambulance Service.

Both Dahlhauser’s 1998 Chevrolet Malibu and Mireau’s 2002 Mitsubishi Montero were termed total losses in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
