“You dream about things like this but you never really think they’ll happen.”

For Matt Wellik and the Emmetsburg E’Hawks, dreams came true Saturday afternoon. Countless hours in the off-season and belief in the idea of ‘we not me’ led to the Class 1A State Championship.

In their 34th appearance in the playoffs, the E’Hawks became the second team in the state to win a title in three different classes of competition – 3A, 2A and now 1A, and a ninth state title for the program.

Emmetsburg’s win came in a 3-0 score off a 34 yard field goal by Wellik over West Lyon, the lowest score in a Championship Game in the history of the Playoffs.

The title game was a hard-hitting, defensive battle from the opening whistle to the final horn, and as the E’Hawk faithful erupted in celebration, their team stood together at the center of the UNI Dome as one unit – STATE CHAMPIONS.
