By Staff | Nov 11, 2008

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS will benefit The Stork’s Closet, a program offered to new mothers by Palo Alto County Community Health and housed at Upper Des Moines Opportunity Outreach. Free will donations to view the Festival of Trees and donations given beside table-top trees will go to The Stork’s Closet. Home for the Holidays is all about family. Emmetsburg Retail Association will decorate Holiday Headquarters to welcome families. And families with new babies will benefit from their efforts.

The Festival of Trees will be on display at Holiday Headquarters (the former Curves building on Broadway). Clubs, organizations and individuals are encouraged to decorate a tree for display. A free will donation will be accepted to view the trees.

Table-top trees, decorated by members of the Emmetsburg Retail Association will also be on display. Visitors at Holiday Headquarters will be encouraged to vote for their favorite tree by placing money in the can by that tree.

Funds raised from the free-will donations and voting for the small trees will be donated to the Stork’s Closet.

The Stork’s Closet is part of the “Growing Healthy Kids” program sponsored by Palo Alto County Community Health. The Stork’s Closet is a part of that program, offering items for new babies, from car seats to diapers.

“Growing Healthy Kids is a home visitation program that we do. If families are a part of Healthy Kids, they can participate in the Stork’s Closet, “ explained Sue Joynt, RN, coordinator.

Sue Joynt, along with Roberta Anderson, RN, and Theresa Peters, RN, coordinate the “Growing Healthy Kids” program through Community Health. The Stork’s Closet is available to Healthy Kids participants and is located at the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Outreach Office on West 25th Street.

Holiday Headquarters will be open Friday, Nov. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 30, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Holiday Headquarters will also be open Saturday, Dec. 6, form 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 7, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Santa Claus will be at Holiday Headquarters on those weekends.

Anyone interested in decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees can contact Michelle James at 712-852-4583 or Deb Hite at 712-852-2098.

Holiday Discount Button Specials will be offered to shoppers for six weeks before Christmas. Emmetsburg Retail Association businesses will be offering weekly specials for holiday shoppers.

Buttons were first offered during Harvest Festival.

“The holiday buttons are great. I used mine at Food Pride after the Harvst Festival and saved over $12.00,” said Peg Martini of Emmetsburg.

Holiday button specials begin next week. Buttons are available from Emmetsburg Retail Association stores and also at Main Street Memories Mall and Calico Cupboard.
