What To Do When It Snows
Winter is right around the corner and with it comes … snow!
We depend on our city crews for snow removal, and they also depend on residents to help with the process.
Here is what the city crews will do:
The first day after a two-inch (or more) snowfall, all streets will be opened for traffic in the following order: hospital, schools, nursing homes, business district, churches (if there is a funeral), and then residential streets.
The second night after snowfall, and the wind has subsided, snow will be removed from the business district. All sidewalks need to be shoveled past the curb, keeping the snow in the wind row. City officials ask that snow is not piled in the street or in public parking spaces.
There is no parking in the business district after 11 p.m. when street crews are removing snow.
Iowa law and Emmetsburg City Code state it is unlawful for any person to place ice or snow from private property, sidewalks, or driveways onto the traveled way of a street or alley.
Sanding will be done in the same order, including the hills and intersections.
Here is what residents can do:
City officials advise that when the streets are icy, the hills cannot be sanded enough to be safe at all times. For added safety, residents are requested to use an alternate route, if possible, when the streets are icy.
Another safety measure – the city requests residents not pile snow in the right-of-way which would obstruct the view of motorists. According to city snow removal policy, the adjacent property owner will be responsible to remove all obstructions in a timely manner or be charged for the removal.
To help the process even more, residents are reminded not to park on the street.
Vehicles should be kept off the streets to allow the snow removal crews to do the best job they can. Iowa law and Emmetsburg City Code state that no person shall park, or leave unattended, any vehicle on any public street, alley or city owned off street parking area during snow removal operations unless the snow has been removed or plowed from the said street, alley or parking area and the snow has ceased to fall. Violators will be ticketed and towed.
Emmetsburg City Code prohibits parking on any city street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. There is a 48-hour limit in city parking lots.
Let’s all work together and make snow removal as easy as possible.
