Scarecrows have popped up all over town. Some are leaning against lamp posts and others stare down from rooftops…all in the spirit of Harvest Festival.

Saturday will be hot – hot – hot! Hot Salsa – Hot Food – Hot Shopping!

Start the day at the Emmetsburg Salsa Contest. Participants will take their salsa (minimum of one pint) to the VFW between 9 and 9:45 a.m. and then the judging begins. First, second and third place winners will be announced. Who makes the best salsa in town?

Food, prizes and live entertainment are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW. This is a great opportunity to purchase the limited edition “Santa” holiday buttons on sale. The price has been reduced for just two hours.

The holiday buttons can be used to shop the Harvest Festival specials from Saturday, Oct. 18, through Saturday, Oct. 25. The list of specials at participating businesses is on page 20 of The Democrat. Santa buttons are also good for featured specials during the six weeks before Christmas.

A free will offering will be accepted for lunch at the VFW, served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Enjoy chili, hot dogs and cinnamon rolls. A portion of the proceeds from the free will offering will go to Upper Des Moines Opportunity for winter heating assistance.

Live entertainment and prizes are also a part of the day at the VFW. There will be drawings for homemade pies every 15 minutes.

Sign up for the Harvest Festival Gift Package at 16 participating Emmetsburg Retail Association businesses.
