What’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys? How about heaps of salsa, an army of scarecrows, and lots of autumnal good cheer?

The Emmetsburg Retail Association will celebrate the fall season with Harvest Fest on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at VFW Hall in Emmetsburg.

Emmetsburg Salsa Contest

A new event this year is the Emmetsburg Salsa Contest. Individuals and families are invited to bring a pint of their own homemade salsa to enter into the contest. All types of salsa are welcome–from hot and spicy concoctions to sweeter varieties, and everything in between. Salsa entries must be dropped off at the VFW on Oct. 18, between 9 and 9:45 a.m.

A team of three judges will taste the salsa samples beginning at 10 a.m. and determine first and second place winners of the Salsa Contest. Those with the top entries will be awarded stained glass “trophies” from Lee Beem and The Glass Shop.

To sign up for the Emmetsburg Salsa Contest, or for more information, contact Ruth Brown at 852-4338 or 712-540-7862.

Harvest Fest Fun

The doors of the VFW will open for Harvest Fest at 11 a.m. The scene will be set with a harvest theme, including 28-inch scarecrows decorated by participating businesses.

On the Harvest Fest menu will be: chili, hot dogs (top your dog with chili or without), crackers, cinnamon rolls, and your choice of water, milk, or soda.

A free will offering will be taken for the meal. Proceeds will be donated to the Emmetsburg office of Upper Des Moines Opportunity for heating assistance for local families in need.

Local entertainment is also planned.

Those attending Harvest Fest will have the opportunity to sign up to win two original sketches by Dave Carpenter. The grand prize will be announced at a later date.

As part of this Emmetsburg Retail Association promotion, “Santa Buttons” will be sold at a reduced price. The buttons offer discounts at participating Emmetsburg businesses for the upcoming holiday shopping season. The buttons will be on sale at a reduced rate only during Harvest Fest and for the following week.

Emmetsburg residents are encouraged to get in the Harvest Fest spirit by decorating the community with scarecrows. To join the fun, call the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce at 852-2283, starting Oct. 1, to add your scarecrow to the list of participants.
