Judging Team Places In State Contest

Emmetsburg FFA members earned a strong finish at the 2008 Iowa FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event in Ames over the past weekend. In addition to earning the 13th place finish in the team standings, a member of the Emmetsburg judging team also earned fourth place in the individual competition at the event.

Emmetsburg FFA Advisor Tara Fastert and the livestock judging team members Daniel Borchardt, Lucas Thomsen, Kyle Hurley and Travis Ring, joined judging teams from Iowa FFA Chapters on the campus of Iowa State University on Aug. 23 for the competition.

The competition was comprised of live evaluation and placing of breeding and market classes of beef, swine and sheep, as well as grading classes of beef, swine and sheep and then providing oral comments on the placings by the competitors.

At the conclusion of the judging, Daniel Borchardt would go on to win fourth place honors in the individual judging out of the 143 competitors, while the foursome placed thirteenth out of the 41 teams in the event.

The competition, which was conducted by the staff of the Animal Science Department of Iowa State University.
