Relay For Life This Saturday
Cancer survivors will be honored at the annual Relay For Life this Saturday, Aug. 9. Palo Alto County Courthouse Square in Emmetsburg will be the hub of activities.
The day will begin with a survivors lap at 12 noon Saturday. Cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will walk the first lap of Relay For Life around Courthouse Square. Cancer survivors are encouraged to call Pat Steffen at 712-852-2061 to have their names included on the cancer survivor list.
Team activities will be held from noon to 10 p.m. People from all walks of life are affected by cancer. They will join in the largest fundraising walk in the nation during Relay For Life.
The public is also invited to participate in the Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m. Saturday. Lighted luminarias, honoring individuals who have survived cancer and remembering those who lost the fight to cancer, will be placed around the track. At dusk, candles in the luminarias will be lighted for the final laps and closing ceremonies.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life will conduct its special luminaria ceremony to recognize those touched by cancer in Palo Alto County. Each will be recognized by a lighted luminaria.
There is still time to create a luminaria before Relay For Life. Contact Jane Brown at 712-859-3951 or Cheryl Harris at 712-859-3467.
Proceeds from Relay For Life will support the American Cancer Society’s cancer research, services to patients and their families, education programs and advocacy activities that have made a healthy future possible for so many.
“Come join us on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Courthouse Square,” says Deb Harris, public relations coordinator for Relay For Life. “You do not have to be on a team to participate. Come enjoy all the awesome entertainment that will be provided as we work toward our ultimate goal of eliminating cancer.”
