School Board Filings Close

By Staff | Aug 5, 2008

The official filing period for the upcoming school board elections in Iowa closed on Thursday, July 31 for candidates wishing to file nomination papers for elections. The 2008 School Board elections will be held Tuesday, September 9. In Palo Alto County, each of the four school districts will have vacancies for election on their respective boards, as well as a seat on the Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees.

In the Emmetsburg Community School District, the terms of board members Scott Dettmann and Kent Egland will be up for re-election. Dettmann has chosen not to run for re-election to a three-year term, and the only candidate to file for the position is Laure Oppenheimer. Kent Egland will run unopposed for re-election to his one-year term.

In the Graettinger portion of the Graettinger/Terril Community School District, incumbent board members Duane Hoffman and Roger Schmidt are running unopposed for re-election to their seats on the board. Both terms will be three years in length.

There will be a contested race for the West Bend-Mallard Community School District, as three persons have filed nomination papers for the two seats up for election on the board. Current Board President Pat Madsen did not file nomination papers and will not run for re-election to his seat, while incumbent board member Charles Wirtz will run for re-election to a three-year term. Also running for a three-year term on the West Bend-Mallard School Board are Lannie Miller and Dawn Schmidt.

For the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School District, incumbent board member Dave Forey has filed for re-election to a three-year term on the board, while board member Jill Williamson did not file for re-election to her seat. Matthew Graves has filed nomination papers for the other three-year vacancy on the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School Board.

Voters living in Director District VI of Iowa Lakes Community College will be voting to fill the unexpired term of former trustee John Hand of Emmetsburg. Patrick Kibbie of Emmetsburg, who was appointed to replace Hand until the September elections, has filed nomination papers to fill out the remainder of Hand’s term, which will run through 2009.

Any eligible electors who have not registered to vote or need to change their voter registration may do so prior to September 5, in order to be able to vote in the school board elections.
