Fun Ride & Iowa Luau Planned For Aug. 10

By Staff | Aug 5, 2008

RUTHVEN – “Fun” is the word. All kinds of “fun” will be had when the Ruthven Fire Department and Ruthven Quasquicentennial Committee join forces in a “fun”draising effort on Sunday, Aug. 10. The Fire Department is attempting to raise $170,000 for a new fire truck, and the Quasquicentennial Committee is seeking to raise money for the 125th year celebration for Ruthven in 2009.

The Ruthven Fire Department will sponsor a Fun Ride, a special event for classic car enthusiasts and motorcycle riders. The Fun Ride consists of a 140-mile ride that starts at the fire station and takes participants through the communities of Webb, Rembrandt, Cherokee, Albert City and back to Ruthven. Each community’s fire department will be selling beverages and other items. Prizes include gift certificates and items donated by area businesses. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and there is a fee to participate. All money raised will go towards the cost of the new fire truck that Ruthven will take possession of in October.

Upon returning to Ruthven, the Iowa Luau will get underway at Centennial Park and Pool. A meal, door prizes, and entertainment will start around 5 p.m. The Fire Department will serve the meal and the Quasquicentennial Committee will provide music and entertainment as part of the fun. The original J.D. Speltz oil painting of Ruthven in 1940 will also be auctioned off.

Singing sensation Tikki Kamakamaka will highlight the evening, along with Ruthven’s own “Hula Girl,” Chelsea Zaragoza. Tikki Kamakamaka has appeared on television and in numerous concert appearances. You won’t want to miss his performance, which is not only limited to Hawaiian songs and dance, but songs by Frank Sinatra and others.

There is no charge to attend; simply bring your lawn chairs and relax to an evening of fun and entertainment.
