New Statues In Place At Veterans Memorial

By Staff | Jul 31, 2008

STATUES were put into place Tuesday afternoon, completing the grouping at the Veterans Memorial on South Broadway in Emmetsburg. Four statues were purchased by members of VFW Post #2295, but were vandalized before they were put into place at the memorial. Two of the statues were so extensively damaged they needed to be replaced. The nurse and the soldier arrived Tuesday. Terry Cooper from MidAmerican Energy used the boom to lift the statues from the truck and lower them onto the concrete platforms. Don Wichman, Gary Leonard and Ron Hersom are pictured (left to right) centering the statues on the platform. Leonard, Palo Alto County Auditor, said the county received $2,200 from insurance to go toward replacing the statue; the insurance is $1,000 deductible. Three juveniles were apprehended in connection with the vandalism. --Jane Whitmore photo
