School Board Election Filing Period Underway

By Staff | Jul 15, 2008

The official filing period for the upcoming school board elections in Iowa opened on Monday, July 7, for candidates wishing to file nomination papers for elections.

The 2008 School Board elections will be held Tuesday, September 9. In Palo Alto County, each of the four school districts will have vacancies for the election on their respective boards, as well as a seat on the Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees.

In the Emmetsburg Community School District, the terms of board members Scott Dettmann and Kent Egland will be up for re-election. Dettmann’s seat will be for a three-year term, while Egland’s seat will be for a one-year term.

In the Graettinger portion of the Graettinger/Terril Community School District, the terms of board members Duane Hoffman and Roger Schmidt will be up for election, with both terms being three years in length.

In the West Bend-Mallard Community School District, the terms of Board President Pat Madsen and board member Charles Wirtz will be up for election, with both of those terms being three years in length.

For the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School District, the terms of board members Jill Williamson and Dave Forey will be up for election, with both seats being three-year terms.

Voters living in Director District VI of Iowa Lakes Community College will be voting to fill the unexpired term of former trustee John Hand of Emmetsburg. Hand, who resigned earlier this summer, was replaced by Pat Kibbie of Emmetsburg to serve until the September elections. Hand’s term on the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees does not expire until 2009.

Under Iowa law, any eligible resident of the respective school district may file nomination papers for a seat on the school board. Nomination petitions are currently available from the Palo Alto County Commissioner of Elections-Palo Alto County Auditor’s Office at the Palo Alto County Courthouse, or from the school board secretary in any of the school districts in the county.

Pat Swanson is the secretary of the Emmetsburg Community School Board, while Lisa Chapman is the board secretary for the Graettinger Community School Board. Barbara Zech serves as the board secretary for the West Bend-Mallard Community School District and Regina Reynolds serves as the secretary of the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School Board.

The Iowa Code requires a school board candidate to obtain nomination signatures from one percent of the eligible electors of the school district, or 50 eligible electors from that district, whichever is the lesser amount, but no less than 10 signatures.

Once the necessary signatures have been obtained, the nomination petitions must be filed with the respective school board secretary prior to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 31.

Any eligible electors who have not registered to vote or need to change their voter registration may do so prior to Friday, September 5, in order to be able to vote in the upcoming school board elections.
