West Bend Celebrates July 4th

WEST BEND – The West Bend Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work preparing for a spectacular Independence Day celebration that promises to be a fun-filled weekend with activities for all ages.

A tractor ride kicks off the festivities today-Thursday, July 3, at 8 a.m. The activities continue this evening with the West Bend Knights of Columbus BBQ at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street. The Knights of Columbus will be serving ribeye steak sandwiches and hamburgers. A pedal tractor pull begins at 6 p.m. and the street dance, featuring the band 24Seven, gets underway at 9 p.m.

Friday’s activities, on July 4, kick-off with a parade at 11 a.m. The members of the American Legion will serve as the Grand Marshals of this year’s parade.

A new activity for 2008 is a four-wheeler pull, held at 107 West Division Street, behind the medical clinic following the parade. Registration begins at 12 noon with the pull to start at 1:30 p.m. Participants must be 14 years of age or older. Entry fee is $10 per hook-up and is open to stock utility and sports models. The Friends of the West Bend Golf Course are sponsoring a Games and Fun Golf Competition for adults at the West Bend Golf & Country Club from 1 to 5 p.m. Activities include longest drive, closest to the pin, ladder ball, and baggo tourney. Prizes will be awarded. There will also be a beverage garden.

The swimming pool will open at 1 p.m. for free swimming for youth and adults alike. Food vendors will open at 1 p.m. and serve into the evening. Bingo can be played from noon to 4 p.m.

A duck pond, beanbag toss, golf, and ring toss are just a few of the carnival games kids can play from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the grounds of the West Bend-Mallard School.

Liberty Games will begin at 1 p.m. These games involve a variety of activities for kids in grades 1-7. Prizes will be awarded to all participants.

At 4:30 p.m., the cow will be placed in the Cow Pie Bingo pen.

Several items have been donated for the fundraising auction that is slated to start at 5:15 p.m. Proceeds go to the July 4th celebration and other community projects in West Bend.

Entertainment on the showmobile stage begins at 12:15 p.m. with a taekwondo demonstration. Ashley McDonald will take the stage at 1 p.m. offering a variety of original Christian music. At 2:30 p.m. the LaRow family will perform a fun mix of blues, rock, and country. Scott Larsen, an Algona native, serves up his sound of music at 3:30 p.m. A Prince and Princess will be crowned at 4:45 p.m. Dance routines by the West Bend-Mallard Pacesetters begin at 5 p.m.

The Little League girl’s softball team will take the field at 7 p.m. with the boys to follow.

The evening sky will light up during the fireworks display which concludes the day’s festivities.

Dad’s Belgian Waffles will be served on Sunday, July 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
