It was a scene of shame and sorrow Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial on South Broadway in Emmetsburg, as three of the four statues awaiting installation were tipped over during the overnight hours. Two of the statues were severely damaged, to the tune of an estimated $4,000, according to Emmetsburg Police Cheif Eric Hanson. The damage occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. June 21, according to Emmetsburg Police. The statues were to be placed on their mounting pedastals later this week, with anticipation of the project being completed for the county’s Sesquicentennial observance next weekend. Despite being tipped, one statue was not damaged and the fourth statue was untouched. Police are continuing their investigation into this sensless and shamful act and are asking for the public’s assistsance with information into the act.
