By Staff | Jun 19, 2008

Steve Dunnick, PA-C, a provider at the Family Practice Clinic in Emmetsburg, has been named recipient of the Golden Hands Award. Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa presents this award to two providers each year for demonstrating exceptional contributions to Mercy Medical Center.

Dunnick was presented the award by the employees of Palo Alto County Health System during a surprise reception held in the Coffey Café at Palo Alto County Hospital.

“Steve was really surprised when he walked into the cafeteria and a room full of co-workers and family started applauding,” said Mary Lee Orr, Family Practice Clinic Manager. “We are very proud to have one of our medical staff receive such a prestigious award. We have such wonderful providers here at PACHS.”

The Golden Hands Award is presented to a medical provider who is compassionate, responsive to patient’s needs and exemplifies Mercy’s standards of behavior. Dunnick was nominated for the award by co-workers, Marcie Simmington, LPN, and Sheryl Darling, EMS Coordinator.

Dunnick, who works as a provider in the Family Practice Clinic and the Emergency Room at PACH, juggles the demands of seeing scheduled patients and providing day-time coverage of the emergency room.

In the nomination letter, co-workers described him as a caring provider who takes time to ensure that the patient’s and patient’s family understand the care they need and the future medical services they require. If needed, he refers the patient for financial counseling, social services, or further medical needs. He has an open, honest, and proactive communication style that has helped patients to take charge of their health and follow-up on needed care.

The nomination letter also describes Dunnick as one who has a positive influence on co-workers, recognizing the value of team-work and insuring that the staff knows how much he appreciates their efforts.

Outside of the patient care setting, Dunnick is actively involved in teaching advanced life support classes and EMS classes. He assists in development of protocols and procedures particularly in the ER and EMS setting bringing to the table new and innovative ideas. He rounds with the orthopedic specialty clinic, presents public education classes, and provides informational radio interviews on current health issues.

Palo Alto County Health System congratulates Steve Dunnick for receiving the Golden Hands Award.
