Lightning Strike Claims Curlew Man

A 20-year old Curlew man died last Wednesday morning, June 11, after being struck by lightning at his home. Palo Alto County Sheriff Dennis Goeders identified the victim as Galen Francis Smith.
According to Sheriff Goeders, the Palo Alto County Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from the Vern Smith residence, 4483 460 Street, at 9:32 a.m. reporting an individual had been struck by lightning. The Emmetsburg Ambulance unit from the Palo Alto County Hospital was immediately dispatched to the residence, along with the Mallard First Responders and Sheriff Goeders. Upon arriving at the Smith residence, emergency responders found Galen Smith unresponsive in the farmyard, where he had been assisting his father when the accident occurred.
Smith was transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Smith, a 2006 graduate of West Bend-Mallard High School, was a mechanical engineering student at Iowa State University.
