Disaster Fund Established To Aid Butler County

By Staff | Jun 12, 2008

Iowa Trust & Savings Bank and Palo Alto County Health System have established a fund to collect donations for the Butler County Disaster Relief. Businesses and individuals can make donations to this fund throughout June to support the disaster relief in Parkersburg and surrounding towns.

On May 25, eight people lost their lives and hundreds lost their home to the strongest tornado to hit Iowa in the last 32 years. The tornado was three-quarters of a mile wide and rated an EF5, with estimated winds up to at least 205 mph. The storm leveled the southern third of Parkersburg and an estimated 350 homes were destroyed in Butler County.

“Throughout the year, employees at Palo Alto County Health System pay a minimum of $5.00 to wear jeans on a designated Friday”, commented Kathy Merrill, Marketing Director at Palo Alto County Health System. “These funds are used to support various non-profit programs. Employees wanted to support the Butler County Relief and thought that others in the county would like to do the same. When we approached Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, they thought it was a great idea and established a fund and a challenge to our community for this need.”

Bank President, Kris Ausborn commented, “We are excited to partner with Palo Alto County Health System to encourage donations for Butler County Relief. This is a great opportunity to support our Iowa neighbors and to encourage support; Iowa Trust will match all donations to this fund, dollar for dollar, up to $1,000.”

Palo Alto County Health System encourages businesses to plan a fundraising event, such as a jeans day, to encourage their employees to donate funds for needs in Parkersburg and Butler County. Also, individuals are asked to consider donating to this relief project.

“We certainly do not want to leave matching funds on the table”, commented Merrill. “The Iowa Trust matching funds make our donations double!”

The Butler County Relief account at Iowa Trust & Savings Bank will accept donations throughout the month of June. Checks should be made out to Butler County Relief and dropped off at the bank or mailed to Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, 2101 10th St, Emmetsburg, IA 50536.
