Let’s Try It Again….

By Staff | Jun 3, 2008

The best laid plans to open a time capsule buried 50 years ago in Emmetsburg were put on hold last Thursday by Mother Nature, but the capsule will be unearthed this Thursday, June 5, as the first official function of the committee planning the 150th anniversary of Palo Alto County.

The capsule was buried in 1958 on the Courthouse Square, and reportedly contains material concerning the first 100 years of Palo Alto County History. At that time, several thousand people flocked into Emmetsburg for the centennial celebration, which culminated in the burial of the time capsule.

The final event of the Sesquicentennial Celebration this July will be the burying of a new time capsule to be opened in 2058. Items from the 1958 time capsule will be on display in Emmetsburg until the end of the celebration then reburied in the new capsule.

The unearthing ceremony will now be this Thursday, June 5, at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Palo Alto County Courthouse in Emmetsburg.
