Celebrating National Nursing Home Week

By Staff | May 8, 2008

Everyone is invited to celebrate National Nursing Home Week, May 11-17, along with area nursing home residents and staff. The American Health Care Association established the week-long celebration in 1967. This year’s theme is “Love Is Ageless.”

Emmetsburg Mayor John Schad recently signed a proclamation declaring the week as a time for “all members of this community to join in this year’s national Nursing Home Week observance by visiting our town’s nursing home residents and by recognizing the high quality of care that our long term care facilities are providing.”

At Emmetsburg Care Center, on Monday, May 12, a free Pie and Ice Cream Social will be held at 2 p.m. in the Dining Room of the Care Center. Staff will enjoy lunch from Subway.

On Tuesday morning, May 12, it’s time for “Timeless Memories.” The afternoon will be spent enjoying the music of Wayne Smith. Staff lunch will be from Sum Hing.

Over the noon hour on Wednesday, May 14, the residents and staff will partake of a BBQ Cookout prepared by the Dietary Department. Melvin Friedrich will entertain with music in the afternoon.

Thursday, May 15, will be a day of pampering for the residents. In the morning, beauty spa treatments will be given, and in the afternoon, it’s time for Glamour Shots. Staff lunch will be from Don Jose and Pizza Ranch.

The Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce will hold their weekly coffee at Emmetsburg Care Center on Friday, May 16, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The staff will compete in a Baby Photo Contest, and in the afternoon, there will be a Hot Air Balloon Launch in the north parking lot. The staff will enjoy Casey’s pizza for lunch.

Lakeside Lutheran Home will kick-off the week on Monday with rolls for the residents and staff from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

Crazy Hat Day is Tuesday. The Activity Department will grill hot dogs. Golf cart rides are also planned.

On Wednesday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Lakeside Lutheran Home parking lot will be the place to be for the Ho-Down! All vehicles are to park on the north side of the Care Center. Wear your favorite Western attire and participate in line dancing, enjoy music by Wayne Smith, visit with the Red Hatters, and savor goodies and a root beer keg.

Thursday will be the day to honor the residents. All working staff will present each resident with a flower at noon. More golf cart rides are planned.

An ice cream social from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday will wrap up the week of activities.

At PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, the fun starts on Sunday, May 11, with a Mother’s Day Tea and Open House. On Monday and Tuesday, staff will be honored. Residents’ Day is Wednesday. Volunteers will be honored at a Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, and doctors will be recognized and presented with goodie baskets on Friday.

At West Bend Care Center, the public is invited to join in the fun.

On Monday, a Balloon Lift-off is slated for 10 a.m., followed by a resident reunion at 11 a.m. Enjoy music with Martin and Jim starting at 1:30 p.m.
