Slash Point Sales Joins Emmetsburg Business Community

By Staff | Mar 6, 2008

Emmetsburg and area residents no longer have to drive to those “big name” stores in other towns for their computer needs. Now, there is Slash Point Sales. The new business opened its doors in November 2007, and has experienced a successful four months.

“The people in our area should have access to the best computer products and services without having to drive 25 miles or more to get them,” said Ryan Berkland, who co-owns Slash Point Sales with his wife, Tonya.

The Berklands reside in Emmetsburg with their two children, Emily, age 7, and Abby, age 5, and are natives of Cylinder. With 18 years of experience, Tonya is in charge of bookkeeping. She has operated a daycare out of their home for five years and has become a familiar face to many in the community.

“I operated a smaller, similar version of Slash Point Sales out of our home until it became too large to manage from there,” explained Ryan. “After requests from family and friends for computer products and computer services became too much to handle individually, we decided to open a retail location that would offer the same kind of retail pricing and services for everyone in the area.”

Ryan has been working with computers for 13 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in information technology (IT) and is a MSCE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), and specializes in computer repair, computer networking, and data management. He is also employed at Pharmacists Mutual in Algona as manager in their IT department.

Store manager Cathy Stanek comes to Slash Point Sales with education and experience in management, retail, and computer-related technologies.

“With 22 years of retail and customer service experience, Cathy is a great addition to the business,” Ryan noted.

Those years of combined experience are helping Slash Point Sales to meet their goal of providing quality “competitively priced” computer products and computer-related services with the convenience of a hometown location.

Slash Point Sales carries such products as: new Acer computers, monitors, and laptops; Linksys and Netgear routers for wired and wireless networking and networking accessories; cables, adaptors, and bulk Cat6 cabling; Canon, Epson, Lexmark, and Hewlett Packard (HP) printers and ink cartridges; and computer accessories and supplies from Belkin, Case Logic, Lite-On, Logitech, Microsoft, Verbatim, and more.

Service is also an integral part of the business.

“Unlike many large computer retailers, we service what we sell,” stated Ryan. “It’s a competitive advantage.”

Ryan explained that Slash Point Sales offers computer repair, computer hardware and configuration, virus and spyware damage correction, and wireless networking setup for your home office.

“In addition to Emmetsburg, we are currently providing products and services for many of the surrounding communities like Algona, Ayrshire, Curlew, Cylinder, Fenton, Graettinger, Lone Rock, Mallard, Ruthven, Spencer, West Bend, and Whittemore,” Ryan said. “We are very happy to have done business with people from these areas already.”

The future also holds promise of another offering by Slash Point Sales–iWireless, an affiliate of T-Mobile cell phone service.

iWireless is different from other area cell phone providers as their signal is a GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications) type which gives the user more flexibility. GSM is the world’s most popular signal type and is used primarily overseas. In the United States, T-Mobile and AT&T are two companies using the GSM signal. All service programming and customer data is stored on a removable memory chip that can be transferred from phone to phone. As a result, the user can own multiple devices, such as a PDA and a cell phone, and switch between them easily.

“The availability in the Emmetsburg area has been delayed due to the harsh cold and resulting problems of installing and setting up the required equipment,” explained Ryan. “We’ve chosen to delay opening the iWireless dealership and retail store in order to provide customers with the best possible service and plans. We’ll have these services available very soon.”

Ryan continued, “We look forward to adding more customers and communities to our list of satisfied clients and are excited about the many new friends and partnerships that we will make along the way.”

Slash Point Sales is located at 3104 Main Street (east of Subway) in Emmetsburg. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For more information about their services and products, call 852-8100.
