Get Out For Cabin Fever Weekend In Ruthven

By Staff | Feb 5, 2008

RUTHVEN — Tired of all the cold snowy weather? Looking forward to something to do? Cabin Fever Weekend is right around the corner.

Saturday, Feb. 9, is the day to get out of the cabin and take in some of the many events in Ruthven during Cabin Fever Weekend.

A few years back, the Lost Island Ruthven Betterment Association thought it would be nice to have a late winter season event that would appeal to everyone. This year is no exception. From sports, to good eats — bargains galore and outdoor fun — there is something for everyone!

The event actually kicks off Friday evening, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. when the Lost Island Fishing Derby begins. This fishing contest will run continuously through 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. There is a $10 entry fee that must be paid before fishing and there will be pay-outs for Walleye, Northern, and Pan Fish. There will also be door prizes and kids prizes given away.

To enter this fishing event, contact Murphy’s Bait & Tackle just north of Ruthven, or call 837-5227 for more information.

The remainder of the events all occur on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Starting at 8 a.m. there will be a Junior High Boys Basketball Tournament at the Ruthven-Ayrshire High School. For more information on this, call 260-3212.

Several downtown businesses will be holding open houses during the day. Relatively Tee’s; The Picket Fence Gifts, featuring Valentine specials; and Body Works Vinyl Graphics will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Creative Punch Studios will be open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Ruthven Antiques will also be open during the event. Each business will have in-store specials and treats for the customers.

With all the shopping, a good noon meal will come in mighty handy. Joan’s Cafe on the south edge of Ruthven will be featuring a Cabin Fever Chili Special starting at 11 a.m. Out at the lake the Lost Island Corner Store will have a soup, sandwich, and pie special with three varieties of soup.

At noon, the judging will take place for the Kids Snowman Contest. Kids and families can build their snowman any time, then register the location of their snowman at the Ruthven Public Library or by calling 837-3760.

Simply build a snowman in your own yard. Crazy ideas are encouraged. First prize will be $100 cash, $50 cash for second, and $25 cash for third.

After all of that, head out to the Lost Island Nature Center at 1 p.m. for a fun family outing of snowshoeing on the trails at Lost Island Lake. The Nature Center Snowshoe Program will begin at 1:30 p.m. Call ahead to reserve snowshoes or skis, at 837-4866.

The day will be capped off with a fundraising supper sponsored by the Ruthven Quasquicentennial committee. The meal will consist of a Soup & Sandwich Supper held at the Ruthven American Legion starting at 4 p.m. and running until 7 p.m. The menu calls for Vegetable and Potato soup, Chili, assorted sandwiches and bars all for a free will offering.

The 2009 Ruthven Quasquicentennial Logo winner will be announced and the new logo unveiled.

Make plans now to spend the day in Ruthven on Saturday, Feb. 9, for Cabin Fever Weekend!
