“Lighting The Way…” Dec. 23 On Harrison Street

By Staff | Dec 20, 2007

Emmetsburg residents who live on Harrison Street will once again be “Lighting the way for Christ”. This annual tradition is Sunday, Dec. 23.

This Mexican custom of lighting Luminarias on Harrison Street, from First Street to Ninth Street, was started in 1993 by Brian and Janis Campbell. The custom is to line the sidewalks and/or driveways with paper bags or plastic milk jugs glowing with flickering candles.

“If everyone on Harrison Street does light their candles, it makes for a beautiful sight,” said Janis Campbell, 301 Harrison Street.

The display will be lighted at 6:30 p.m. for one night only, Dec. 23. The public is invited to drive down Harrison Street and experience the magic of the night.

“We want to thank all the residents on Harrison Street for participating and we hope that Dec. 23 will be another successful evening of making Harrison Street glow,” said Janis. “Brian and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
