Collision Claims Life
A collision shortly before noon on Thursday claimed the life of an Emmetsburg man and sent a rural Ayrshire woman to a Sioux City hospital. The Iowa State Patrol says 22-year old Robert Joseph Biddle of Emmetsburg was killed in the collision, which occurred at the intersection of 560th Avenue and 340th Street, northeast of Cylinder.
According to Trooper Kevin Krull of the Patrol’s District Six office in Spencer, the accident was reported at 11:41 a.m. to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 13. The collision occurred when a 2002 Chevrolet pickup driven by Robert Joseph Biddle was southbound on 560th Avenue and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with 340th Street. An eastbound 1996 Ford Windstar van, driven by 78 year old Mary Catherine Gappa of Ayrshire then hit the Biddle vehicle in the front passenger side tire. After the impact, both vehicles entered the ditch south and south and east of the intersection and rolled after entering the ditch. Authorities say Biddle was ejected from the vehicle during the roll over and that Gappa was trapped inside her vehicle, which came to rest on the passenger side. The Emmetsburg Fire Department was called to the scene to extricate Gappa from the wreckage of her van with the Jaws of Life.
After being extricated, Mary Catherine Gappa was transported directly to Marian Health Center in Sioux City by Marian Air Care helicopter, which was called to land at the accident scene for transport. No condition report was available on Gappa from hospital officials.
Assisting the Iowa State Patrol at the accident scene were Palo Alto County Sheriff Dennis Goeders and Deputy Eric Ring, along with the Cylinder Fire Department, Emmetsburg Fire Department, Emmetsburg Ambulance and Sentral Area Ambulance Service of Fenton.
