P.A. Garden Club September Meeting Minutes

By Staff | Sep 21, 2018

The Palo Alto Garden Club met for our September meeting on Tuesday, September 11th at the Shores in Emmetsburg. Hostesses were Sue Faulstick, Debbie Opheim and Alice Ann Underwood. The meeting was called to order by President, Cynthia Berkland who led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Garden Club Creed. Tip of the month was shared by Alice Ann Underwood who suggested that this is a great time of the year to slip some of those plants we may want to use outside again next year. She does not use water to get those slips to root but rather puts the slips right into potting soil mix. She told us it is very important to remember to plant the slip so a leaf node is below the top of the soil. Alice Ann suggested coleus as one of the easier plants to get to take root. Roll call was answered by 19 members.

In correspondence Cynthia shared a request by Upper Des Moines Head Start to contribute to their Book Program. A motion was made by Jamie Christensen and seconded by Jane Whitmore that anyone who wanted to contribute to that program could do so and then the club would make up the rest of a $50 donation. MC Cynthia also shared a request by National Garden Club to contribute to a project called Penny Pines. More information was requested on that program.

In unfinished business Cynthia recognized our club member Laura Blanchet who currently has several of her art items on display at the public library. We were encouraged to be sure to stop by and take a look. Jane Whitmore gave us an update on the Blue Star Memorial program that she has been gathering information on. Jane and others are still in the process of learning more about how we could fund this project. Janice Kassel was recognized for the book she has recently authored.

In new business we took an opportunity to take an in depth look at various aspects of the District 6 Garden Club meeting that we will be hosting in Emmetsburg on April 24, 2020. Sounds like a long time until then but after a very good discussion from the group we decided several committees need to be organized so we can get plans in place and have plenty of time to work on the details. More information will be coming in future months. The YOTM for September goes to Nick & Trisha Casey.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned. Our next meeting will be October 9th. Jaime Christensen will be giving us pointers on how to prepare our flower beds for winter.
