Emmetsburg Middle School Update

Sixth Grade Pen Pals
Sixth grade students at the middle school have recently begun working on a pen pal project. They have received letters from students in Germany, who are about the same age. They were very excited to read the letters and write back to their German pen pals. The students live in southwest Germany, in Sandhausen, Bundesland, which is similar to a state in the U.S. This is close to Heidelberg. The school the German students attend is Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium, which is a middle/high school and also the first two years of college. There are about 900 students from grades five through twelve.
Interestingly, everyone there takes English as their first foreign language. So the students who have written to the Emmetsburg students are practicing their English. In grade six, they take either Latin or French, and in grade eight, they can choose to add Italian or biology, physics, or chemistry.
The Emmetsburg students are writing letters to return to the German students and hope to continue exchanging letters for at least the rest of the school year. They are writing about the school, community, weather, and the students’ individual interests.
