Nolan spray painted the image, assisted by Lisa Forburger from NRCS. Students said they learned how the lake can be polluted when things other than rain water go into the storm sewer. This can affect the fish and even people when they swim in the lake. Emmetsburg residents are also reminded not to blow grass clippings into the street. Grass clippings, too, are a source of pollution. --Jane Whitmore photosVeronica &?Kevin Ortiz

DO NOT DUMP – DRAINS TO LAKE — Emmetsburg second grade students painted a bright, orange reminder to residents: Do Not Dump – Drains to Lake on storm sewer intakes around Five Island Lake on Tuesday. With the help of Palo Alto County Naturalist Miriam Patton and Lisa Forberger of the Farm Service Agency of Palo Alto County and members of the Emmetsburg FFA, the second grade students spray painted this reminder beside storm sewers on city streets.
