June Yard of the Month

By Staff | Jun 23, 2016

JUNE YARD OF THE MONTH -- Kathy Roethler is pictured with one of several garden spots at her home on 212 North Superior in Emmetsburg. The front is neatly landscaped with trees and a windowbox filled with geraniums and sweet potato vines. The lot behind the house is filled with trees, grasses, hosta plants and flower beds. With ample spring rains, the hosta have grown quite large this year. The largest of the flower beds contains perennials, including hosta, hydrangea, day lilies, coreopsis, astilbe, daisies and black eyed Susans. Kathy’s late husband, Bob, was a tree lover, with the flowering crab his favorite. There are a dozen different types of flowering crab on the double lot that extends from North Superior to North State Street. Red twig dogwood and clematis are trained over the arched trellis. There are bird baths and bird feeders tucked around the property, along with hanging baskets of flowering annuals. Perennials under the evergreen trees include hosta, coral bells and ground cover, with impatience to add a pop of color. --Jane Whitmore photo
