G/T Elementary Students Plant Trees

By Staff | May 17, 2016

TERRIL – Elementary students in the Graettinger-Terril Community School District got a chance to help make a difference in their community and world recently, even though Mother Nature had other plans.

After applying to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources earlier this year, the GT Elementary was awarded a Trees for Kids Grant to provide for the planting of 33 trees along the west side of the elementary playground and school building where the football field is located in Terril.

A date of Friday, April 29 was selected as planting day, but due to inclement weather on that day, not all of the trees were planted. Students planted several of the trees that afternoon, and will plant the remaining trees in the next few days.

In the meantime, students are raising funds for ongoing expenses for the tree planting, including watering buckets, tree stakes and roping, hose and a hose cart for watering the young trees.

Any money raised beyond that will be held in a fund for future expenses that may arise regarding tree maintenance.
