May Garden of the Month

By Staff | May 12, 2016

MAY GARDEN -- Everything is lush and green after a spring rain. The gardens at the home of Mary Clasing, corner of 22nd and Grand, have different shades of green with flourishing hosta, day lilies and yellow tulips that have already bloomed (above). Mary (right) and Garden Club member Kay Kibbie are pictured at the Yard of the Month for May. At the Clasing home, Mary has over 25 varieties of hosta, and numerous green and flowering perennials. The hidden gem is in the back of the Clasing house where Mary built a waterfall. Statues are surrounded by ferns, lily of the valley, hen and chicks, yarrow, phlox and spring tulips. Shrubs along the property are cedar and arborvitae. In other spots there are clematis, peonies, black-eyed Susan and climbing roses. Shrubbery includes ninebark, hydrangea, and snowball bushes. A flowering crab was planted in 1998 in memory of Mary’s husband, Dale. There are ornamental apple trees and birch trees. The huge, old maple trees were transplanted onto the property by Mary’s father years ago. --Jane Whitmore photo
