The polls decided key Mayoral and City Council races in Palo Alto County on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

With current Emmetsburg Mayor Myrna Heddinger relinquishing the position, Patrick Degen was chosen as Emmetsburg's new Mayor by voters, defeating challenger Kelly Higgins Bay in a close race.

Of the 882 votes cast for Mayor, Degen garnered 496 votes, or 56.24%, while Bay received 379 votes (42.97%). Seven write-in votes made up the remaining .79%.

"I'm honored to be elected as Emmetsburg's Mayor and I appreciate the confidence of the voters," said Degen.

"I look forward to working with the community and hope to keep things moving forward in the right direction."

Incumbent Councilman At-Large Bill Burdick ran unopposed and received 733 votes, or 97.73%. There were also 17 write-ins for the seat.

Incumbent Councilman Ward 2 Ryan Berkland also ran unopposed, receiving 98.97% of the vote with 192 votes, while two write-ins were also counted.

Burdick and Berkland will be joined at the council table by Councilman Ward 4 Todd Bell, who defeated Corey Gramowski with 121 votes over Gramowski's 79.

Emmetsburg's Mayor and City Council representatives will each serve four-year terms.
