For the Next Century

Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

A century ago this area was mostly a slough. Land had little value. then tile came to be found as a way to drain off the water and the land became productive and valuable.

If you are from this area chances are your forefathers worked and paid, in good times and bad to maintain the drainage on their land and neighborhoods.

D.D.180 was established in 1903 as one of the first drainage districts in Palo Alto County.

It is still being used, but has become useless.

As trustees of every D.D. in the county the supervisors must make all decisions by need, not want.

The current price of corn and beans, mainstreet business, property taxes and the number of kids in school are not part of a drainage decision.

People who own land in D.D. 180 should call their assessment a valuable investment in their property, neighborhood and community.

Just as your forefathers did. For the next century.
