Five Wrestlers Advance to State

The Emmetsburg High School Wrestling team competed in the Class 1A District meet in Lake Mills on Saturday.

During the 113-pound bout, Sean Brennan won over Jack Ramaker of Lake Mills by a 4-2 decision. Sean headed into the 2nd place match against Cade Stearns of GTRA and won again by a 9-6 decision. He then met up with Bryce McDonough of Central Springs for the 1st place match being beaten by a close 6-5 decision, but securing the 2nd place finish.

Ethan Berven, wrestling at the 132-pound class, fought off Caden Schrage of Northwood-Kensett by a 10-7 decision. He won the 2nd place round by a rule and was automatically sent to the 1st place bout against Jacob McBride of Newman Catholic. McBride proved too much for Berven and beat him 12-4 for a major decision win giving Berven the 2nd place spot for the day.

The first championship spot taken on the night for the E-Hawks was at the 145-pound class where Spencer Griffin secured a major decision score of 11-2 against Lake Mills' Casey Hanson. In the 1st place bout, Griffin fought hard against Mark Dawson of Eagle Grove and won by a 10-8 score.

In the 2nd place bout at the 160-pound weight class, Mason Griffin continued to give Spencer Roth of G-T/R-A troubles winning by a decision score of 11-7. Mason wasn't able to come up with the win in the championship round against Elijah Wagner of Lake Mills losing in a tight 5-3 decision.

During the heavyweight matches of the night, Calvin Hart won off of his 3rd period pin aginst Jake Anderson of North Union. While fighting for his championship spot, Hart lost by a fall in the 2nd period against Chandler Redenius of West Hancock securing his 2nd place finish.

The E-Hawks will be travelling with their state competitors to the biggest stage of Iowa High School Wrestling in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena on February 13 for the three-day event.
