Winter Seining on Five Island Lake

February 12, 2019
Emmetsburg News

WINTER SEINING -- The bigmouth buffalo that came out of this one spot on Five Island Lake ranks in the top ten of Greg Mohr's career as a fisherman. "These pulls don't happen. It was pure luck," said Mohr, owner of East Wet Fisheries out of Spirit Lake.

The large group of buffalo was seen on sonar. Mohr had anticipated the fish would scatter, due to noise in the water from moving equipment onto the ice. "Maybe we caught them sleeping,"?Mohr quipped.

This pull brought in just under 100,000-pounds of buffalo. Each dipper (above, right) brings in 300-pounds at a time.

A reminder to everyone:?there is thin ice at the pull site (left). Even as the men bring in the fish, the ice gets thin due to the movement of the fish. This is visible in the photo, top left.

Mohr said he has a three-year contract with the DNR to seine Five Island Lake. He is looking at a spot directly west of this site and also one on the South Bay to seine yet this winter.
