John (Gene) E. Swanson

A Celebration Of Life will be held for John (Gene) E. Swanson on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Chapel (formerly the United Methodist Church) in Ayrshire.

Interment will be at Silver Lake Cemetery near Ayrshire, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post #173 of Ayrshire.

The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John E. Swanson, son of John A. and Madella (Matthiesen) Swanson, was born Sept. 4, 1931 southwest of Ayrshire.

As a young boy, John became known as Gene to his family and friends. After graduating from Ayrshire High School in 1951, Gene served in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict, from 1952 until 1954. After being honorably discharged, he returned to his home where he farmed for many years.

Gene was a member of the American Legion Post #173 and the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire.

Gene passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant siblings, Paul and Marilyn Swanson; two brothers, Rodney and Dale Swanson; and a sister-in-law, Helen Swanson.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Myrt Swanson of Spirit Lake; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
