A Picture Worth 1,000 Words

Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

Darin Fraser's photo of the dredge was worth way more than a thousand words. It was as if it was a prayer honoring the memory of the late Doc Coffey, Bill Stillman, Art Weir and others who personally contributed to or voted for dredging Five Island Lake. That was 20 years ago.

And thanks to the Emmetsburg Democrat/Reporter for "dredging" up that story again. We thought the dredge was dead and gone, partially submerged at the north end of the lake.

The Emmetsburg City Council and the Five Island Lake Board acted on it July 25, 2018. They voted to remove it from the lake and "preserve" it for potential future use. Amen!

Could the dredge be born again? John Davis, a Lake Board member suggested a paint job. Jeff Stillman suggested a new starter and battery. Former dredge operators like Mike Lenz are still around to offer advice. They ran it and kept it running at the time.

Former wrestling coach/educator, Clint Young, who built his home on the lake, is reportedly leading the drive for the formation of a Five Island Lake Association.

Since dredging was suspended two to three years ago, there is new dredging science. Engineers who spoke in Emmetsburg called the new method "spot dredging," a new approach which combined with water-shed planning, focuses on water quality by dredging only places in the lake where phosphorus and nitrates have collected.

Thanks to the City Council and Lake Board for literally saving the dredge. There are new ideas in town.

Respectfully,

(Signed)David E. Nixon, Ed.D.
