Getting Back To The Basics

In our ever-changing world of technological advances, children and adults are finding new ways of entertainment via the Internet, video games, etc. In moderation, there is nothing wrong with this. It does; however, in my point of view, distract us from a fundamental basic of the foundation of education Reading.

Many different stories, concepts and places can be found on the Internet. So much to do at the touch of your fingertips; yet, for those who never pick up a book to read, they don't realize what they are truly missing. The ability to lose yourself in another world while reading or to see the world through someone else's eyes is something a person does not really understand until they pick up a book and begin to read.

In May, Iowa Public Television launched an eight-part series called, "The Great American Read." In the first episode, 100 of America's best-loved novels were revealed. The novels were chosen by a random national survey of 7,800 people.

The purpose of the 'Great American Read,' is to engage readers into the writer's world. To figure out how and why writers create these fictional worlds and how readers are affected by their stories. The diversity of our nation and shared human experiences show through these novels.

Many of the novels listed have been made into movies for television and theaters. Chances are you have seen at least one of these. However, if you have not read the book, I recommend that you do. So much is edited out for movies to keep the movies short and the readers attention, that sometimes the original meaning of the story gets lost in the translation. Many of the books included are classic such as Little Women, Moby Dick and Gulliver's Travels.

If you are interested in learning more about 'The Great American Read," you can go online to and click on 'The Great American Read' or stop at the Iowa Lakes Community College/Emmetsburg Public Library and get all the details.

Lose yourself in the wonderful world of books. Get back to the basics.
