Emmetsburg Extravaganza Show Choir Event This Weekend

For the 24th consecutive year, the Emmetsburg High School Show Choir Extravaganza will take to the stages this Friday and Saturday, March 2-3. A total of 40 high school and middle school show choirs, along with vocal jazz choirs from Iowa and South Dakota will perform throughout the day, with the first groups taking the stage at 8 a.m. to be highlighted by the finals competitions for the show choirs, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Performance centers will be located in the high school auditorium for Vocal Jazz choirs while Middle School, Prep and Show Choirs will compete in the high school gymnasium. Awards for Middle School and Class 1A Show Choirs will take place in the Auditorium at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, with awards for Class 2A, 3A and 4A Show Choirs and Vocal Jazz Choirs taking place in the Auditorium at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. The host Emmetsburg Varsity Show Choir, "High Voltage,"?will perform in exhibition at 6:10 p.m. in the gym prior to the announcement of Finalists for the Evening Championship taking place at 6:30 p.m. in the gym.

The six show choirs that received the top scores during the day in the gym will compete for the overall championship in the evening finals concert. The Finals Round features the best of the best and provides the audience with an incredibly high-energy and entertaining event. The finals begin at 7:30 p.m. and conclude at 10:30 p.m. with a performance by the Emmetsburg's Junior varsity show choir, "Black and Gold." The overall awards will follow with the presentation of trophies to cap off the day's event.

The Emmetsburg "Extravaganza" Show Choir competition begins at 8:35 a.m. Saturday in the High School gym and will feature four Class 4A show choirs: Des Moines East, Marshalltown, West Des Moines Dowling Catholic and Sioux Falls, SD Washington High Schools, along with Class 3A show choirs from Spirit Lake, Forest City, Sioux Center, Sheldon, Carroll, Atlantic and Sumner-Fredericksburg . Competing in Class 1A and 2A are show choirs from Rock Valley, Pocahontas Area, North Union, Belmond-Klemme and Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Prep groups from Spirit Lake and Sioux Falls, SD Washington will also compete during the day.

On Friday evening, Middle School Show Choirs take the big stage, starting at 5:00 p.m. groups from Sioux Center, North Union, Spirit Lake, Forest City, Sioux Center and the Emmetsburg Middle School Show Choir, "Evolution," which will perform in exhibition to cap off the Friday evening Middle School competition.

Vocal Jazz choirs will compete on Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m. in the Auditorium at the high school. Participating will be two Middle School groups from Algona and West Sioux of Hawarden, along with Class 1A and 2A schools Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Central Lyon, South O'Brien, Sheldon, Alta-Aurelia, Rock Valley and West Sioux of Hawarden. Prep groups from Spencer and Sioux Falls, SD Washington will also compete, along with Class 3A and 4A groups from Spencer, Adel-DeSoto-Minburn, Greene County of Jefferson, Spirit Lake and Sioux Falls, SD Washington High Schools.

All told, these groups will bring in excess of 1,500 performers to the performance stages in the high school gym and auditorium during the weekend.

As the groups arrive throughout the event, Emmetsburg vocal music student hosts greet and escort the groups to a homeroom decorated and supervised by the student hosts. In addition to serving as student hosts, EHS students also serve as judge hosts and tabulating scores, checking hand stamps at the door and working in the concessions stand. Over 130 EHS vocal students will help out at some time during the day.

The Emmetsburg Vocal Music Booster parents group organize the food service for the task of providing food for the visiting show choir members, as well as parents and interested spectators who turn out to see the performances. Parents help out by supervising the hallways, warm-up rooms and serving food in the kitchen.

Parents not working during the contest provide food items to the effort. All parents of the EHS vocal students contribute in some way to help the Vocal Department in what has turned into the department's major fundraising activity of the school year.

Anyone interested in volunteering during the event is welcomed to assist.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend the Emmetsburg "Extravaganza" Invitational on both Friday evening and all day Saturday. Food is provided in the student center all day long, with an evening pasta dinner, which will begin serving at 4:00 p.m.

The public is invited to stop by the Emmetsburg High School gym and auditorium this Friday and Saturday to not only support the EHS vocal musicians, but also to catch the excitement and musical energy of some of the finest show choirs in the upper Midwest region.
