E-Hawk Grapplers Finish Sixth At Herb Irgens Invitational

IDA?GROVE - Emmetsburg's E-Hawk wrestlers earned sixth place overall in the 28-team Herb Irgens Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday. The E-Hawks would finish with 106 team points as Gilbertville Don Bosco won with 251.5 points.

Emmetsburg would be led by Ethan Berven's second place finish at 132 pounds.

Berven would start with a bye and then earned a 2:00 win by fall before scoring a 6-0 decision win and then earning a 2-0 Sudden Victory win in the semi-finals. Meeting Max Wettingel of Don Bosco, Berven would lose an 8-2 decision to earn the runner-up finish.

At 138 pounds, Spencer Griffin would finish in fourth place for Emmetsburg. Griffin had a by and then a 2:33 win by fall and 14-5 Major Decision before being pinned in 1:52. Griffin then earned a 1:55 win by fall, but lost an 11-6 decision to Kolton Roth of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire to settle for fourth place.

Christian Nichols would earn fifth place in action at 120 pounds, after starting with a first round by and earning a 3:44 win by fall. Nichols then won a 17-3 Major Decision, but lost a 17-2 Technical Fall in in 4:12 before coming back to score a 9-8 decision win over Isaac Bruggeman of West Lyon for the fifth place finish.

At 106 pounds, Kelly Griffin opened with a bye but was pinned in 1:44. Griffin would get two byes in the consolation rounds and then scored a 2:58 win by fall and a 5:26 win by fall before being pinned in :48. In the fifth place match, Griffin would be pinned in 1:21 by Mason Hill of Cherokee to finish sixth.

It was a similar fate for Brett Hoyman at 145 pounds, as he opened with a bye but lost an 8-2 decision. Hoyman then earned a 2:44 win by fall and 2:50 win by fall along with a 5:29 win by fall before taking a 6-4 decision win, only to lose an 11-6 decision in the consolation semi final before losing an 8-1 decision to Nate Cornwall of Spirit Lake Park to finish sixth for the E-Hawks.

Levi Aldous would place seventh at 126 pounds after a bye and a 1:17 win by fall, but was pinned in :38 and then earned a 5:41 win by fall. Aldous would lose an 11-7 decision but won seventh place with a 6-4 Sudden Victory decision over Damon Williams of Cherokee.

At 152, Mason Griffin opened with a 1:55 win by fall and a 7-3 decision, but lost a 12-4 Major Decision. Griffin then won a 7-3 decision, but lost a 9-6 decision before he won a 9-5 decision over Cael Rahnavardi of Don Bosco to finish seventh for Emmetsburg.

Jimmie Steffens, wrestling at 220 pounds, got a first round bye but lost a 9-3 decision before earning a 5:37 win by fall and then scoring a 1:35 win by fall and a 10-9 decision victory. But Steffens would lose a 13-5 Major Decision before winning an 8-5 decision over Dylan Rottinghause of Don Bosco to finish seventh.

At 113 pounds, Sean Brennan earned a by but lost a 12-3 Major Decision and had a by before earning a 1:18 win by fall, but was eliminated from the tournament in a 5-3 decision loss to Caden Neumann of Carroll.

At 160 pounds, Jackson Knight had a first round bye but lost a 6-2 decision and then lost a 17-6 Major Decision to Lance Else of Ridge View to be eliminated from the tournament.

In action at 170 pounds, Jon Lace II opened with a :47 win by fall and then earned a 5-2 decision victory before being pinned in 1:25 of the quarterfinals. In the consolation round, Lace would be eliminated from the tournament when he lost a 13-9 decision to Domonick Roskami of Sioux Center.

In action at 182 pounds, Nick Schany had a first round bye and earned a 1:01 win by fall, but in the quarterfinal, was pinned in 3:09 and then eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 2:27 by Treighton Schubert of Cherokee in the Consolation round.

And at 285 pounds for Emmetsburg, Evan Brennan opened with a bye but would lose a 5-3 decision before receiving two straight byes in the consolation round. But Brennan would be eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 3:26 by Huberto Orosco of Sioux Center.

The E-Hawks will use this week to prepare for the Audubon Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 27 before hosting the 1A Sectional tournament Saturday, Feb. 3.
