Titans, E-Hawks Finish 1-2 In Conference Wrestling Tourney

GOWRIE - The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire won the 2018 Twin Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday, with Emmetsburg's E-Hawks earning the runner-up finish. The Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/ Gilmore City-Bradgate would finish in ninth place overall in the tournament, held at Southeast Valley High School in Gowrie.

The Titans would crown two individual champions on the day in Kolton Roth and Treyton Cacek, but earned four runner-up finishes from Monte Matthews, Lucas Hoffman, Nate Larson and Carter Murray.

At 138 pounds, Kolton Roth would earned :27 win by fall and then scored a 2:41 win by fall before winning the championship with a 13-3 Major Decision over Spencer Griffin of Emmetsburg.

Wrestling at 170 pounds, Treyton Cacek earned a first round :51 win by fall and then claimed a 3:56 win by fall before he earned the championship with a 4:45 win by fall over Alex DeRoos of Alta-Aurelia.

Earning second place for the Titans was Monte Matthews at 113 pounds, as he started with a :23 win by fall and then claimed a 2:36 win by fall. In the title match, however, Matthews would come up short in a 7-3 decision loss ot Colden Bethel of Southeast Valley.

Lucas Hoffman, wrestling at 132 pounds, started with a 3:21 win by fall and then won a15-5 Major Decision . In the title match, Hoffman would be edged in a 3-0 decision loss to Trey Lawrence of Southeast Valley to earn the runner-up honors.

At 160 pounds, Nate Larson earned a 14-6 Major Decision win and then won a 7-4 decision, but in the finals, Larson would lose a 9-0 Major Decision to Brody Goodman of South Central Calhoun to finish in second place for GT/RA.

In action at 182 pounds, Carter Murray earned a :41 win by fall and then earned a 4:44 win by fall but in the finals, Murray had to forfeit for medical reasons to Kyler Fisher of Southeast Valley to settle for second place.

At 152 pounds, Spencer Roth earned a 1:05 win by fall but lost a 7-2 decision. In the consolation round, Roth then earned a 2:00 win by fall and then earned third place with an 8-0 Major Decision over Chandler Witzke of Pocahontas Area.

AT 195, Blake Miller opened with a 1:23 win by fall, but lost a 7-1 decision. In consolation action, Miller earned a :54 win by fall and then scored a 1:52 win by fall over Nick Schany of Emmetsburg to take third place.

Brock Grimm, wrestling at 120, won an 11-1 Major Decision but was pinned in :43 before coming back to score a 1:21 win by fall and then lost the consolation title in a 10-2 Major Decision to Christian Nichols of Emmetsburg.

At 145, Blake Schany won an 8-6 decision but lost a 5-2 decision before coming back to scored a 7-2 decision win. In the Consolation final, Schany would lose a 17-6 Major Decision of Mason Studer of West Bend-Mallard/GCB to finish fourth for the Titans.

Cade Stearns would start with a 7-1 decision win, but lost an 18-2 Technical Fall in 3:04 before he was pinned in 2:29. In the fifth place match, Stearns earned a 10-1 Major Decision over Peyton Wunschel of East Sac to take fifth place.

At 126, Hunter Naig lost his opener in a 7-5 decision, but came back to earn a :46 win by fall before being pinned in 2:00. In the fifth place match, Naig earned a 5-1 decision over Nathan Thoma for the placing.

Rounding out the placings for the Titans was Kyle Rehm at 295, as he was pinned in 3:16 to start, but then took an :08 win by fall before being pinned in 1:35 and then finishing sixth in an 11-4 decision loss to Keegan Jepsen of Pocahontas area.

The Titans' Nole Bochmann would wrestle at 220 pounds and was pinned in 4:16 and then eliminated from the tournament when he lost a 6-4 decision.

Emmetsburg Results

The E-Hawks would finish the tournament with four runner-up finishes on the day. Levi Aldous, Spencer Griffin, Bret Hoyman and Mason Griffin all earned the runner-up finishes, while Christian Nichols, Ethan Berven, Jon Lace II and Jimmie Steffens all finished in third place.

At 126 pounds, Levi Aldous started out with a 1:44 win by fall and then scored a 6-3 decision victory. In the championship match, however, Aldous would lose a 15-5 Major Decision ot Shea Ruffridge of Pocahontas Area to settle for second place.

Spencer Griffin, wrestling at 138 pounds, received a bye in the opening round and then scored a 19-4 Technical Fall in 4:11 of his match before meeting Kolton Roth of GT/Ra in the finals, where he would come up short in a 13-3 Major Decision to finish second for the E-Hawks.

At 145 pounds, Bret Hoyman earned a first round win by fall in 1:50 and then earned a 5-2 decision win to advance to the finals. In the title match, Hoyman would lose an 8-1 decision to Chase McAlister of South Central Calhoun for the runner-up finish.

Mason Griffin, wrestling at 152 pounds, opened with a :42 win by fall and then earned a :59 win by fall to earn a championship match with Garret Bruce of East Sac County, who would earn a 12-9 decision win over Griffin to give the E-Hawk second place.

At 120 pounds, Christian Nichols received a first-round bye, but was pinned in 2:46 and dropped into the consolation bracket. Nichols came back to score a 1:04 win by fall, and then earned third place with a 10-2 Major Decision over Brock Grimm of GT/RA.

Ethan Berven, wrestling at 132 pounds, opened with a bye but lost a 4-2 decision. In consolation action, Berven scored a 12-4 Major Decision win and then went on to earn a 7-4 decision win over Dawson Mack of East Sac County to earn third place honors.

At 182 pounds, Jon Lace II earned a :26 win by fall and a :46 win by fall, but would be pinned in 4:44 in the semi-finals. In the consolation semi-final, Lace would score a :33 win by fall and then won third place with a 3:31 win by fall over Josh Van Hulzen of South Central.

Jimmie Steffens would earn a 5:17 win by fall to open action at 220, but lost a 12-3 Major Decision before coming back to win an 8-6 decision and then captured third place with a 3:23 win by fall over Alex Jacobsen of Manson NWW.

At 106 pounds, Kelly Griffin lost a 4-2 decision to start and then earned a bye in the consolation bracket before earning a 2:29 win by fall and then being pinned in 4:52 by Nathan Harden of Sioux Central to finish fourth for the E-Hawks.

Nick Schany, wrestling at 195, earned a 1:11 win by fall but was pinned in 4:30 before earning a :47 win by fall, only to be pinned in 1:52 of the consolation final by Blake Miller of GT/RA, giving Schany the fourth place finish.

At 285 pounds, Evan Brennan opened with a :38 win by fall, but was pinned in 5:14 before earning a 3:13 win by fall. But in the third place match, Brennan was pinned in 1:40 by Clayton McFarland of Southeast Valley to finish fourth.

Kaleb Schleisman wrestled at 113 pounds and would be pinned in :50 and 3:59 in his two matches and did not place for the E-Hawks.

At 160 pounds, Jackson Knight stared with a :21 win by fall over Nathan Weflen of Alta-Aurelia, but would lose a 6-2 decision and was eliminated from the tourney after being pinned in :50 by Connor Fehr of West Bend-Mallard/GCB.

At 170 pounds, Zach Yates was pinned in :51 to start the tourney and was eliminated from the tourney when he lost a 13-7 decision to Coleman Grimm of West Bend-Mallard/GCB.

Results

The Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard would be paced by the third place finish of Mason Studer as the team finished ninth on the day.

At 145 pounds, Mason Studer would open with a 1:49 win by fall, only to be pinned in 1:14. Studer then earned 5:54 win by fall to move to the Consolation final, where he earned third place with a 17-6 Major Decision victory over Blake Schany of GT/RA.

In action at 160 pounds, Connor Fehr opened the day with a 1:53 win by fall, but would lose a 14-6 Major Decision. Fehr would come back to score a :50 win by fall and then earned a 4-3 decision to move to the consolation final, where he came up short in an 11-7 decision loss to Tyler Reis of Pocahontas Area to finish fourth for the Wolverines.

At 138, Hunter Jergens was pinned in 3:07 to start the day, but earned a 2:25 win by fall before losing a 7-6 decision. In the fifth place match, Jergens would earn a 2:41 win by fall over Jonah Siebert of Southeast Valley to place fifth.

Creytan Grimm wrestled at 152 pounds and lost an 11-2 Major Decision to start before earning a 1:54 win by fall. Grimm would be pinned in 2:00 in the consolation semi-final, but won fifth place with a 3:17 win by fall over Tyler Gaes of Alta-Aurelia.

At 170, Coleman Grimm was pinned in 2:51 but won a 13-7 decision before losing an 8-0 Major Decision and then being pinned in 2:28 by Jerod Campbell of South Central Calhoun to finish sixth.

Cole Dickey, wrestling at 182, earned a 1:17 win by fall to start, but was pinned in 4:23 before earning a 3:04 win by fall, but was pinned in :33 and then pinned in 2:47 by Brock Mier of Alta-Aurelia to finish sixth.

At 113, Nolan Blair was pinned in :23 and then lost a 9-6 decision to be eliminated from the tournament.

Nick Ford, wrestling at 220 pounds, was pinned in :33 and then eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 4:22.

Rounding out the efforts for the Wolverines was Logan Studer at 285 pounds. Studer was pinned in :38 to start the day, and would be eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in :08.
