Emmetsburg's E-Hawks earned a split in basketball action with Estherville Lincoln Central Tuesday night. The Lady E-Hawks dominated all the way for a 57-45 win, but the E-Hawk boys would battle back only to fall in overtime by a 40-37 final tally.

In the girls contest, Emmetsburg jumped out to an early 14-2 lead after the opening quarter of play and never had to look back. The Lady E-Hawks would go on to post a 27-14 lead at the half-time break.

In the second half, Estherville Lincoln Central would actually outscore Emmetsburg 15-12, but the Lady E-Hawks had built up enough of a cushion to preserve a 39-29 lead to start the final stanza of play.

Down the stretch, Emmetsburg was able to keep Estherville Lincoln Central at bay and went on to claim the 57-45 final margin of victory.

Free throws were huge in the contest, as Emmetsburg sank 28 of their 36 trips to the charity stripe in the contest. Abbie Schany would have a career night with 20 points, while Gretchen Hofstad added 13 points and Molly Schany chipped in 12 markers. Lindsay Carter and Raven Brown would both score four points each, while Mackenzie King and Mikayla Frerichs both scored two points each.

In the boys contest, Emmetsburg would get off to a slow start, as the E-Hawks would trail 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Midgets rode the three point shot, making a trio of the long shots and a regular bucket in the first quarter of play.

Emmetsburg would claw their way back into the contest in the second quarter, cutting Estherville Lincoln Central's lead to just three points when the intermission rolled around, trailing 17-20.

The E-Hawks would find a spark to start the third quarter, as they were able to outscore the Midgets 12-9 in the third frame to tie the contest up at 29-29 to start the fourth quarter of play.

The two teams would trade buckets in the final eight minutes of regulation play, and with :37 to play, a controversial five-second call against the Midgets' offense gave Emmetsburg the ball, but a last-second layup try by Zach Mason fell away to send the game into overtime at 35-35.

Emmetsburg would get the tip, but on two straight trips to the hole, the E-Hawks came up empty before ELC struck with a three-pointer with 2:36 to go in the overtime.

The E-Hawks would get two free throws from Blake VerMulm with :40 to go to cut the score to 37-38, but ELC hit two free throws and a last second three by Corbin Saathoff fell short for the 40-37 loss.

Emmetsburg got 16 points from Blake VerMulm, while Zach Mason added nine points. Ben Dunlap scored five points and Tim Geelan added three, while Hunter McAllister and Corbin Saathoff both chipped in two points each.
