E-Hawks Sweep Southeast Valley In League Matchup

Emmetsburg picked up a pair of Twin Lakes Conference wins Friday night over Southeast Valley in a girl-boy doubleheader.

The Lady E-Hawks would earn a 55-28 win to improve to 2-0 in Twin Lakes Conference play and 3-1 overall on the season, while the E-Hawks earned a 66-52 victory over the Jaguars to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Emmetsburg's girls got off to a nice start against a very scrappy Southeast Valley team, who played a determined defense for the entire contest. The Lady E-Hawks would take a 14-9 lead after the opening quarter of action, and played some good defense of their own, holding the Jaguars to just nine points in the second quarter to post a 27-18 lead at the half-time break.

Emmetsburg would match Southeast Valley in the third quarter, scoring seven points while the Jaguars got eight points, but the Lady E-Hawks took their 34-26 lead into the final quarter and turned in a defensive gem down the stretch, holding Southeast Valley to just two points in the final quarter for the 55-28 final margin of victory.

For the Lady E-Hawks, Molly Schany led the offense with 17 points on the night, while Abbie Schany scored 12 points and Gretchen Hofstad added 11 points. Lindsay Carter scored seven points, while Maggie Jackson came off the bench to chip in four points.

Hailey Foxhoven and Heidi Malm would also come off the bench to add two points each to the winning effort.

In the nightcap boys contest, Emmetsburg came out strongly and took an early 18-10 lead after the opening quarter of play. The two teams would settle in during the second quarter, as the two teams traded buckets to the intermission, where Emmetsburg held a 35-26 advantage.

In the second quarter, the back-and-forth game continued, with Emmetsburg holding a 54-38 lead to start the final quarter of play.

Southeast Valley tried to make a run at the E-Hawks late, using full court pressure defense, but Emmetsburg would get several clutch plays down the stretch to claim the 14-point, 66-52 final margin of victory.

Leading the way for Emmetsburg was Blake VerMulm with 18 points, while Corbin Saathoff added 14 points to the mix. Hunter McAllister scored 10 points and Ben Dunlap came off the bench to also tally 10 points on the night. Tim Geelan chipped in seven points, while Zach Mason scored three points and Dylan Kibbie and Clayton Swanson each added two points to the winning effort.
