William A. Doerning

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Reverend Clem Currans officiated.

Inurnment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Bill was buried with Military Rites from V.F.W. Post #2295 of Emmetsburg. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

William Arnold Doerning, son of Arnold and Marie Agnes (Cullen) Doerning, was born Dec. 28, 1945 in Algona. He received his education in Emmetsburg.

Bill enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and was inducted on Jan. 28, 1965. He was stationed in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. On Jan. 27, 1969 Bill was honorably discharged.

Bill returned to Emmetsburg where he was involved in the trucking industry. He was also in law enforcement and held other various jobs in the area.

Bill was an avid bowler and attended several tournaments both locally and state wide. He enjoyed golfing and could be seen playing daily, even into winter as long as the course wasn't covered in snow. He looked forward to attending coffee each morning with his friends and Bill was a devoted family member.

Bill was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post #2295 and the Emmetsburg Golf Course.

Bill passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 at Muse-Norris Hospice Center in Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marita Doerning of Webster City; two nieces, Maribeth Doerning and Regina Zlomke; nephew, Jeffrey Doerning; great nieces and nephew, Natalie, Robert Vivian, Maddison and Avery; as well as many other relatives and friends.

The family requests that memorials be given to Holy Family Catholic Church or Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines.
