Excellence In Education

November 9, 2017
by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

The "Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Schools" is not only the largest fundraiser for all 16 school systems in the Diocese of Sioux City each year, but it also serves as an opportunity to recognize educators and other school employees for their dedication and determination to developing an outstanding learning environment for their schools.

One of the recipients for the "Excellence in Education" Award this year was Mike Brennan, teacher at the Emmetsburg Catholic School. Nominated by Catholic School Principal Jean Hyslop, "One of the first things that I noticed about Mike was that he wears athletic clothes because he teaches P.E. to grades K-8. On Mass day however, Mike changes his clothes into khakis and a school shirt or dress shirt before he goes to Mass. I find this to be an excellent way to set a nonverbal example to the students as a role model in our school."

She also noted in her nomination letter that Mike's philosophy of Catholic education is strong in all that he does.

"Working in the Catholic school gives me the opportunity not only to teach core classes but to teach how important faith, family and friends are in our lives and to lead y example," Brennan said. "Growing up in the Catholic Church and attending Catholic School has blessed my life in more was than I can mention, but one of the biggest things I've been given is the gift of lifelong friends."
