FORT?DODGE - The 2017 Cross Country season concluded Saturday afternoon for eight Emmetsburg High School runners. Participating at the 2017 Iowa State Cross Country Championships, Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawk team finished 11th overall in the team standings, while E-Hawk runner Cruz Bowman claimed a 17th place finish overall in the Class 2A?Boys championship.

Sunday provided brisk conditions for runners at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, with temperatures in the mid-40's and light wind, but footing was solid for the State meet course.

The Lady E-Hawks, who had qualified for the State Meet by virtue of their third-place team finish at the 2A Regional meet in Orange City on Nov. 19, had a good starting position on Saturday and took advantage of the start to set good paces.

Along with the team qualification, three Lady E-Hawk runners, Raven Brown, Gabrielle Janssen and Hailey Foxhoven, had qualified for state as individuals as well, by virtue of finishes in the top 15 at the Regional meet.

On Saturday, sophomore Raven Brown would lead Emmetsburg with a 20;30.1 clocking, which equated to 17th place as an individual.

Sophomore teammate Gabrielle Janssen would finish in 36th place overall with her clocking of 21.02.6 on Saturday, and sophomore Hailey Foxhoven turned in a clocking of 21:24.3 to finish 42nd overall.

Freshman Allison Freeman capped off her first season on varsity with an 81st place finish in a time of 22:38.0, while fellow freshman Izzy Householder would finish in 85th place in a time of 22:59.1

Raylene Poeppe, the third freshman on the squad, finished with a 23:26.7 time to earn 89th place and senior Mary Nelson would finish her cross country career with a 26:10.7 clocking for 105th place.

"I?am so proud of all of the kids and their efforts today,"?noted Emmetsburg Cross Country Coach Katie Heddinger. "They have all improved over the season and worked very hard to accomplish the things they did this season."

Officially in the Class 2A Girls race, MidPrairie of Wellman would win the Championship with 65 points, while Monticello was second with 72 points. Emmetsburg would finish the day with 261 points in 11th place.

In the Class 2A Boys division, Emmetsburg was represented in the State Meet by junior Cruz Bowman. Bowman, who missed a majority of the season rehabilitating from an injury, only ran the final three meets of the season for the E-Hawk boys, but ran well in those outings.

Bowman finished in the top 15 individuals at the 2A District meet in Orange City on Oct. 19 to earn his trip to the State Meet.

On Saturday,Bowman got a good start and ran towards the front of the pack the entire race, and would end up finishing in 17th place overall with his time of 17:01.3 to cap off an abbreviated but successful season for the E-Hawk runner.

"I'm very happy for Cruz, after he was only able to run in the very last few meets this season, coming off an injury,"?Coach Heddinger said. "He came out in those meets and just ran like he'd been at it all season. He really worked so hard to earn his placing at state and I?couldn't be prouder of him."
