E-Hawks’ Season Ends At Hands Of West Lyon

October 24, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's hopes to see action in the post-season were snuffed out Friday night in a 42-0 loss to top-ranked West Lyon. For the E-Hawks, the season closes with a third place finish in Class 1A District One with a 5-2 league mark and 5-4 overall record.

The E-Hawks faced two handicaps on Friday, as starting quarterback Connor Joyce was sidelined with a leg injury and a 30-mile an hour wind was blowing the length of Duane Twait Field from south to north.

West Lyon would take the wind to open the contest. The Wildcats would strike first after Emmetsburg went three downs and punted in the first 2:00 of the game. West Lyon struck quickly, using a three-yard run to take a 7-0 lead after the conversion kick with 10:09 to go in the quarter.

Once again, Emmetsburg would punt into the wind and West Lyon drove downfield to score from a 15-yard touchdown pass. The kick made the score 21-0 with 2:52 to play in the first quarter.

Again, Emmetsburg went three downs and punted into the wind, and with good field position again, West Lyon engineered a 20-yard pass for a touchdown, but the kick failed, making the score 27-0 to end the first quarter.

With the wind at their back in the second quarter, the E-Hawks would end up punting to start the second quarter. But, West Lyon would muff the punt and Blake VerMulm recovered the ball at West Lyon's 22-yard line with 10:48 to go in the half.

With its best field position of the game, Emmetsburg started driving downfield and drove to the 16-yard line before West Lyon's defense stopped the drive on downs with 8:22 to go in the half.

The Wildcats would quickly drive downfield and with 5:28 to go in the half, scored off a one-yard run and added a two-point conversion for a 35-0 lead.

Emmetsburg took over but quarterback Tim Geelan had a pass intercepted at the E-Hawks' 43-yard line that was returned by West Lyon's Jaden Snyder for a touchdown with 4:07 to go in the half. The kick gave West Lyon a 42-0 lead that would end the scoring for the half, and eventually the contest.

With a continuous clock in the second half, midway through the third quarter, Emmetsburg would mount a drive that would stall out at West Lyon's 25-yard line, but on their next possession, the E-Hawks drove to the Wildcats' 31-yard line, only to fumble the ball away.

In the final quarter, West Lyon's reserves drove to the Emmetsburg 10-yard line but turned the ball over on downs. Emmetsburg would drive the length of the field and with :22 to play, were stopped at the one-yard line to basically end the game.
