E-Hawks Control Own Destiny For Regular Season Finale`

October 19, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

When West Lyon comes to Emmetsburg this Friday evening in the regular season finale`, one thing is for certain. Each team controls their own destiny for the post season.

The E-Hawks, who currently stand in second place in Class 1A District One behind West Lyon, have a district record of 5-1, their only loss to Western Christian. West Lyon, however, is undefeated in the district at 6-0.

Even with the loss to Western Christian in week two of District play, Emmetsburg holds a 3.5 point-point differential average lead over the Wolfpack in the district, 10.17 to 6.67. And, Western Christian has one district loss as well, to noneother than West Lyon.

Combine all those tidbits together with a continually improving E-Hawk squad, and throw in Senior Parent's Night and of course, Lady Luck, and Friday's meeting between West Lyon's Wildcats and Emmetsburg could be quite the game to see.

But make no mistake, West Lyon knows the E-Hawks well, as the two teams have butted heads on numerous occasions over the years on the gridiron.

That fact isn't lost on Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Dunlap and his team as they prepare for Friday night's regular season finale`.

"West Lyon is a very talented, senior-dominated team,"?Dunlap said. "That group of seniors have played together as starters for the past three years, so they all know their roles."

Dunlap continued, "they have an exceptional quarterback in Snyder, and they have great speed and great size all around their lineup."

The basic challenge in preparing for West Lyon is that their offense is wide open, according to Dunlap.

"Offensively, they do everything, work out of multiple sets, run and pass. Defensively, they use a 4-3 and are just a very talented team in all three aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams."

After Emmetsburg's 33-0 shutout win over Hinton last Friday, Dunlap and the E-Hawk coaching staff were proud of the overall effort once again.

"Friday was a great team win for us at Hinton,"?Dunlap said. "We still need to continue to improve our game in all three aspects, offense, defense and special teams, and we need to clean up the penalties, as always."

But with the E-Hawk defense coming away with four interceptions in the win, along with a couple of big quarterback sacks. Conversley, the offense has played well, anchored by the line of late.

"I look at Friday's game as a great opportunity for us to control our own destiny as far as the playoffs are concerned," Dunlap said. "We will just have to play our best game on Friday night."
